BNP- Awami league clash in Dumki, 40 injured including police

Clashes broke out between BNP and Awami League in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali. The incident took place in front of the Upazila BNP office around 10:30 am on Saturday. As a result, the BNP’s protest rally has been thwarted.

At least 40 leaders and activists of both sides, including police, were injured in the chase and brick-throwing incident. Awami League leaders and activists have been accused of vandalizing the Upazila BNP office during the clashes. Police have been deployed in the area since the incident.

According to local sources, the Upazila BNP had called for a protest rally this morning as part of the central BNP’s program to protest the rise in commodity prices. Leaders and activists of different unions started gathering in front of the party office from morning to join the rally. The BNP took out a protest procession around 10:30 am.
At that time a procession under the banner of Upazila Juba League suddenly came to the area with different slogans. According to the BNP leaders and activists, from that procession Juba League leaders and activists and Chhatra League activists started throwing brickbats at them.

The two sides started chasing each other. At this time both sides started throwing brickbats like rain. At one stage, various furniture including chairs and tables were vandalized by entering the BNP office. At least 40 people, including a police constable, were injured in the incident.

Among the injured were BNP convener Khalilur Rahman, joint convener Zahid Hawlader, Faruk Hawlader, Juba Dal member secretary Ripon Sharif, Sechchasebak Dal convener Shamim Hawlader and Sramik Dal president Habibur Rahman who were admitted to Dumki Upazila Health Complex.

BNP’s Khalilur Rahman complained that the BNP’s pre-announced program started peacefully. To thwart this program, the leaders and activists of Awami League-Juba League have attacked their procession with different slogans. At that time their party office was vandalized. He claimed that at least 30 BNP members were injured in the incident.

However, Sirajul Islam, general secretary of the Upazila Juba League, denied the allegations, saying the Juba League had staged processions across the country in protest of the Jamaat-BNP anarchy. BNP terrorists attacked the procession. He claimed that at least 10 of their supporters were injured.

Officer-in-charge of Dumki police station Abdus Salam said the situation in the area was under control at present. Injured policeman Delwar Hossain has been shifted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal after initial treatment. No case has been registered in this regard yet.
